Carlos Vazquez
What set the hook?
I began spearfishing along the coast of Barcelona, Spain, in the late 1970s. Inspired by the legendary Jacques Cousteau and captivated by The Silent World of scuba diving, I developed a lifelong passion for the ocean, marine life, and, in particular, the fascinating world of the octopus.
In 1987, with the encouragement and guidance of my great friend and scuba diving mentor, John Sims, I earned my NAUI Open Water Diver certification. John generously continued to mentor me as I advanced through the ranks, earning certifications as an Advanced Diver, Nitrox Diver, Rescue Diver, Master Diver, Assistant Instructor, and Divemaster. In 1989, I achieved a major milestone in my diving career by becoming a certified NAUI Instructor, #33009.
Throughout my career as a professional scuba diving instructor, I continued to expand my training and credentials, becoming an Advanced Instructor with Scuba Schools International (SSI) and a Two-Star Instructor with CMAS Americas. For many years, I had the privilege of teaching and representing all three internationally recognized diving organizations—NAUI, SSI, and CMAS Americas—while sharing my knowledge, experience, and passion for the underwater world with countless divers.
In 2026, I began a new chapter in my professional diving career when I joined the staff of Signature Scuba and became its General Manager. Continuing my commitment to professional growth and dive education, I also became a certified Scuba Diving International (SDI) Instructor.
What began as a fascination with the Mediterranean Sea along the coast of Barcelona has grown into a lifelong journey dedicated to scuba diving, education, mentorship, and a profound appreciation for the marine environment.
